Budgeting Software: A Free Way to Manage Your Finances

SmartMoney has an article comparing free software to help you manage your personal finances. They have the listings of the features of 4 different offerings.

Currently I use a Google spreadsheet to keep track of what we should spend for the month. We actually track our expense for one month a year to see how we are doing. We have been able to keep within our budget for many years using this system.

I am looking at using a program or website to track our actual expenses if it is very easy to use and requires little manual data input.

Has anyone used these programs: Clear Checkbook, Mint, Wesabe or Yodlee Money Center?

I've tried Mint and couldn't get it to work with my bank. Mint had my bank listed as a bank that would work with the program. A security feature with my bank is an image identifier, which prevented Mint from connecting with my bank. They said they would work on it. I gave them a month then I gave up on working with it.

Its just an OK system. I wasn't extremely happy with it. It worked fine with downloading transactions from my credit cards.

I am going to look at Clear Checkbook. EverBank has image for a security feature so I am not sure if that will work as well. I will let you know if it works.

I am a Quicken fan. The idea of uploading all my most sensitive information to a single website online has about the same appeal as paying more taxes, as far as I am concerned. I don't care how they all say they protect the data.

True - I access all of our financial information online, but nowhere is there a single place where the passwords and account numbers for all our finances is stored.

    Shadox,

That is a good point, I did worry about that myself. I was going to use the Mint beta but I was afraid to give them all my passwords.

Does quicken work with site that have image security features?

I use quicken and I can download transactions to quicken even though my bank has image verification. I love quicken. I just have to change the categories sometimes, but for the most part is pretty good.
